What is the difference between myotherapy and Remedial Massage?

Remedial massage is a form of therapy that involves manipulating soft tissues to alleviate pain and support the healing process. It often includes methods like deep tissue massage, trigger point therapy, and stretching. This type of massage is commonly used to address musculoskeletal injuries, persistent pain, and tension-related headaches.

In contrast, myotherapy is a more specialized treatment that focuses on evaluating, treating, and preventing pain and dysfunction in the muscles and joints. Myotherapists use a variety of techniques, such as massage, joint mobilization, dry needling, cupping, and corrective exercises, to manage pain and enhance movement.

A key distinction between the two is the level of training. Remedial massage therapists generally complete a diploma program, while myotherapists undergo more advanced education, earning either an Advanced Diploma in Myotherapy.

What this means for you as a client, is you will get the same level of care, but with more skills, knowledge and a deeper understanding of pain complaints and pathologies. You can expect better outcomes, and faster results by deduction of WHY you are in pain or dysfunction, rather than just treating the symptom.

Why is Myotherapy better?

Myotherapy blends the clinical expertise of a sports physiotherapist with the hands-on approach of a skilled remedial massage therapist. This creates a practitioner capable of assessing injuries and providing effective pain relief.

Myotherapists are also well-trained in dry needling, a technique that uses acupuncture needles to alleviate muscle pain and stiffness. In addition, they excel in prescribing personalized rehabilitation exercises tailored to your unique needs and abilities.

We address pain stemming from a variety of conditions, such as ligament sprains, tendon tears, and nerve pain in the legs and hands, as well as chronic joint and muscle discomfort.

By adopting a neuroscience-based approach to pain management, myotherapists help you understand the brain’s role in pain and empower you to take charge of your recovery, leading to a pain-free life.

Myotherapy offers an excellent, cost-effective alternative to other treatment options.

What is Neurokinetic Therapy?

NeuroKinetic Therapy® corrective movement system is a sophisticated bodywork modality that can be used as both an assessment and rehabilitative technique for low back pain, neck pain, carpal tunnel, and other injuries.

David Weinstock, author of Neurokinetic Therapy, an Innovative Approach to Manual Muscle Testing, co-developed this technique in the mid-1980s, and has used it to treat a variety of disorders that are featured on this website. The NeuroKinetic Therapy® corrective movement system protocol employing a system of precise muscle tests has the ability to change the programming of the Motor Control Center (MCC) in the cerebellum. The MCC coordinates all movement patterns in the body. It learns through failure.

A good example is a baby learning to stand. Through many attempts and failures the baby finally achieves success. But how? The MCC chooses the most successful attempts until standing happens without “thinking” about it. Conversely, after an injury, the MCC adapts to a compensation pattern and holds that in its memory forever unless it is convinced to change. A good example is a whiplash accident in which the posterior neck muscles brace for the anterior neck muscles. This pattern can endure forever unless there is some intervention.

When an NeuroKinetic Therapy® corrective movement system practitioner tests the weak anterior neck muscles, they fail thus opening the MCC to new learning. After the balance is restored, the MCC is “reprogrammed” and recognizes the anterior neck muscles. To complete the reprogramming, specific rehab exercises are assigned to “burn in” the new functional pattern.

Briony has only begun her NKT journey, achieving accreditation in Level 1 in October 2024. There are 3 levels to this course and is hoping to complete Levels 2 and 3 in 2025 if they come to Australia. This technique and protocol is used worldwide by 10’s of thousands of practitioners and is the cutting edge of treatment and solving complex pain complaints. Briony is the ONLY certified NKT practitioner this side of Melbourne. The never ending pursuit of knowledge, the best treatment protocols and methods and most effective way to help clients regain quality of life is the highest of priorities to her.

My mission is to help where others have failed. I strive to find the why in pain patterns and complaints and will go above and beyond to help solve chronic pain for members of the local community.

We live in an incredible area and everyone should be able to get out and enjoy it and not let pain hold them back!
