Frequently asked questions

❓ What is Functional Neurology?

Functional Neurology is a gentle, hands-on approach that works with the brain and nervous system to improve how the body moves, feels, and functions. It’s especially helpful for clients with chronic pain, emotional dysregulation, fatigue, retained primitive reflexes, or stress-related symptoms. We look at how the brain and body communicate, and use specific techniques to “reset” those pathways for lasting change.

❓ What are Primitive Reflexes and Why Do They Matter?

Primitive reflexes are automatic movements babies are born with — like the startle reflex. These are meant to integrate (switch off) as the brain matures. When they don’t, they can cause issues with focus, coordination, behaviour, emotional regulation, and learning. I work to gently assess and integrate these reflexes, often seeing improvements in just 1–2 sessions without daily homework.

❓ What is Cranial Nerve Work?

Cranial nerves are like direct highways from your brain to your face, eyes, ears, jaw, throat, and gut. If they're not functioning properly, you might experience headaches, facial tension, dizziness, jaw pain, nausea, difficulty swallowing, or light/noise sensitivity. Cranial nerve work helps reset these pathways, improving both physical and emotional symptoms.

❓ How Could Emotions Be Causing or Contributing to My Pain?

Unprocessed emotions and past stressors can stay "stored" in the nervous system and tissues of the body. When the brain perceives these stress patterns as a threat, it can create or hold onto pain — even long after an injury has healed. By working with the nervous system, we help the body feel safe again, which can reduce or even resolve persistent pain.

❓ Do You Work With Post-Concussion or Head Injury Patients?

Yes. Functional neurology is a gentle, non-invasive way to support recovery from concussion and head trauma. We look at visual tracking, balance, cranial nerve function, primitive reflexes, and overall brain-body coordination to support healing and reduce symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or brain fog.

❓ What if I’m in pain? Should I Book Functional Neurology or Myotherapy?

If your pain is due to an injury, muscular tension, or structural imbalance, Myotherapy may be a great place to start.
If your pain is chronic, unpredictable, flares with stress, or has no clear cause — Functional Neurology can help address the nervous system patterns that are keeping you stuck.

Still unsure? Just reach out — I’m happy to help you choose the right approach.

❓ What Does a Functional Neurology Session Involve?

Each session is calm, personalised, and fully clothed. We assess nervous system patterns, movement, reflexes, and sensory input, then apply targeted techniques to reset or regulate these pathways. It’s relaxing and often deeply grounding — with changes that continue long after you leave.

❓ Do You Treat Men Too?

Yes! While I specialise in working with women and children, I regularly treat men experiencing pain, tension, nervous system stress, or postural issues.

❓ What Age Do You Start Seeing Children?

Children from around 3 years of age and up are welcome. Kids' sessions are 30 minutes and designed to be fun, calm, and engaging while supporting their nervous system development.

❓ Can I Bring My Child With Me to My Appointment?

Yes — if your child can sit quietly with a toy or device while you're being treated, they’re absolutely welcome. For functional neuro sessions, it’s best if you can be fully present, so if you have a toddler or younger child, consider booking a time when you can come solo if possible.

❓ Do I Need a Referral?

No referral is needed. You can book online anytime. If you're not sure which service is right for you, feel free to contact me first.

❓ What Should I Wear?

Wear something comfy you can move in — activewear, gym clothes, or anything loose. You’ll stay clothed during all functional neuro sessions. Myotherapy treatments may involve hands-on work requiring access to specific areas (like shoulders or back), so something flexible is ideal.

❓ Can I Claim Private Health?

Yes — if you have private health cover for Myotherapy, you can claim after your session or at the time of treatment.

❓ How Many Sessions Will I Need?

It depends on what we’re working on — some people experience big changes in 1–2 sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support. I always aim to make changes that last, without overloading you or recommending unnecessary appointments.
